Test your IQ level with SYIQ
SYIQ is an online IQ testing platform for everyone. Every student can learn, no matter how intelligent. But some students struggle in school because of a fragility in one specific area of intelligence. These students often benefit from special education programs like SYIQ. There, they get extra help in the areas where they are struggling. IQ testing can help teachers to determine which students would benefit from such additional assistance. In short and long-term memory measurements, IQ tests begin to evaluate it. They also measure how well and how quickly people can solve puzzles and retrieve data they have heard.
What is an IQ Test
An IQ test is an evaluation that measures a range of cognitive capabilities to measure the intellectual ability and potential of an individual. IQ tests are among the psychological tests most commonly performed.
It is essential to examine the exact calculation of these test scores in order to know what these scores actually mean. Today, many tests are standardized and results are calculated by comparing individual performance to the standards for the age group. While many tests employ similar methods, it must be noted that every test is different and that scoring methods may not be the same from one test to the next.
History of IQ Testing
The first intelligence test in the early 1900s was developed by the French psychologist Alfred Binet. The study of Henry Herbert Goddard however results in modern IQ testing in the United States. Goddard was a psychologist who graduated from Clark University in 1899 with a doctorate in psychology. The Binet test was translated from English to French. This examination was used to examine basic intellectual functions and to endorse diagnoses of mental health in U.S. school children.
In the history of psychology, Goddard is a controversial figure. This is because of the reason he argued that low IQ adults should not reproduce. Fortunately, culture has moved a great deal from these perspectives. Today, there are several IQ assessments, most of which are used to help detect learning disorders for various reasons.
Types of IQ Test
There are a number of different IQ tests in existence and their content can vary considerably. Some IQ tests are used with adults, but many are specifically designed to be administered to children.
Some commonly used IQ tests include:
- Cognitive Assessment System
- Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale
- Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children
- Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale
- Universal Nonverbal Intelligence Test
- Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children
- Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities
Uses of IQ Tests
Modern IQ tests often focus on abilities such as memory, language abilities, spatial perception, and mathematical skills. The ability to see relationships, remember information and solve problems are important components of intelligence, so these are often the skills on which IQ tests focus. IQ tests can be used for a wide range of purposes including:
- Assessment and diagnosis of intellectual disability
- Job candidate evaluation
- Educational assessment and placement
- Cognitive research
- Assessing cognitive abilities including memory, speed, and attention
|IQ Level||Descriptive Classification|
|120 to 129||Superior|
|110 to 119||High Average|
|90 to 109||Average|
|80 to 89||Low Average|
|70 to 79||Borderline|
|69 & below||Intellectual Disability|
How to measure an IQ level
A personâs IQ can be measured by having the person take an IQ test. By definition the average IQ is 100. If you get a score higher than 100, you did better than the average person, and a lower score means you performed less.
Using measurements developed by Stern and Terman, the IQ test became a standard tool for classifying individuals based on normative scoring. Here\’s how the scoring works:
- Mental Age/Chronological Age X 100 = Intelligence Quotient
- The 6-year-old with the Mental Quotient of ½ has an IQ of 50.
- The majority of people have an IQ level between 85 and 115
It\’s important to know that, while the Stanford-Binet test is still in use, it is no longer the only IQ test. The Wechsler tests are now most commonly used in USA.
In addition, while typical Intelligence tests can be helpful, they may not be 100% accurate when measuring the IQ of people with developmental differences or learning disabilities. IQ tests such as the TONI have been developed to measure non-verbal IQ.
